I have recently come to the realization that I need broader terms to define an "Interesting Place" or an adventure. An interesting place can be a physical location, a mental destination, the process of a journey, an adventure, a story, a book that takes you to a new mental landscape...
In the past I've been pretty literal about location but I'm starting to realize how limiting this is. I was talking to my cousin's daugher a while back. She is eleven and I asked her where her favorite places were. She told me this:
"My favorite places are: Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, and my book world." I asked her what she meant by that and her response was that her book world was the place she went when she was reading an amazing book. It was the feeling she felt when she fell into a story. The story became a place and an experience that she was having.
With this in mind, I'd like to mention a few of my favorite book worlds (There are many more):
Middlemarch By George Eliot
Elsewhere By Gabrielle Zevin
The Secret Life of Bees By Sue Monk Kidd
The Harry Potter Series By J.K. Rowling
Atonement By Ian McEwan
Persuasion By Jane Austen
The Twilight Saga By Stephenie Meyer
To Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? By Philip K. Dick
The Song 0f The Lioness Quartet By Tamora Pierce
The Anne of Green Gables By L.M. Montgomery
Let me know what books take you to other worlds.
